It can cause intestinal blockages if the tortoises eat too much of it. The crushed oyster shell is better because it can be digested and it also absorbs water from the air keeping humidity low, which sand will not do. All the people/institutions which have the best success with Egyptians (in the East anyway) seem to use the crushed oyster shell as a substrate.
