what are you looking for in a turtle?if you would prefer an weaker swimming adult turtle, small enough that a pair can be easily maintained in a 55 gal,i would suggest pretty much any mud or musk(keeping in mind that they aren't exactly the friendliest turtles, usually fairly nippy);or if you can afford them,my personal favorites, spotted turtles.i can hold my adult pair of spotteds in one hand, and they are really inquisitive, smart turtles.mine freely take food from my fingers, and aren't at all shy.adult spotteds average 4 1/2-5" long, and muds/musks are a little smaller.
if you're looking for a strongly aquatic turtle in the 6-8" range, consider male maps or diamondback terrapins.
these are just a few suggestions, although i still strongly suggest spotteds.
