I have a small '09 JCP in a 20 gallon long until I finish the enclosure I'm building for him. I think you are right that it's easier to provide a good temp gradient this way than with a 10 gallon tank. I have a heat lamp on one side, and no belly heat - he spends all of his time perching, and ignores the hides I have provided on both ends. His basking spot runs 90-95F, and the cool end is 75F. I spray periodically to keep humidity up, especially approaching shed time.

Years ago I had a corn snake lose the last 1/2 inch of her tail tip to a bad shed. Since then, I always check them head to tail post-shed, and if there is ANY stuck shed, I put them in a Sterilite tub filled with wet, warm sphagnum moss until the shed loosens enough to be removed. They don't usually like this much, but it's better than losing a piece of their tail.

Good luck with your guy.
