Well, I have to admit I don't have much experience with the whole, digital/laptop needs you have. I'm of the opinion though that you'll get a better "feel" for what you are viewing by looking into the scope. Digital camera's (of which you can hook to your laptop) are available but are usually used for recording what you find and/or sharing the view with others.

A few features for a microscope I'd recommend include:
Binocular vision
An electronic light source
A tray that can be moved left/right, and forward/backward (and obviously up/down for focusing)
A set of len's that include a 100x, 40x and 10x. The eye peice should add another 10x to your view.

Your tech friend should be further able to help you find what you are looking for.
