STURGIS JOURNAL (Michigan) 03 September 10 Alligator taken from sweet corn field near Burr Oak (Rosalie Currier)

Burr Oak, Mich: Last week when Jeff Adamski of Burr Oak went out to pick sweet corn, he didn’t expect excitement.
It was about 7 p.m. on Friday when Adamski was minding his own business gathering corn for the family freezer. Suddenly two women also picking corn came running from a few rows over, screaming that they saw an alligator.
“Yeah, right,” and “No way,” were his first thoughts, Adamski said. However, when he skeptically followed the women, sure enough there was an alligator.
Not a big one, but still it had plenty of teeth.
Soon the ladies left the field with their share of corn or their share of excitement, but Adamski stayed to study the misplaced reptile.
“I backed away and he darted at me,” Adamski said. “I backed up faster and he darted faster.”
That’s when Adamski decided he needed to deal with the problem.
“What if you took a 5-year old kid in to pick corn and it latched on?” said the father of four children.
So Adamski sprinted to his truck grabbed a 4-foot bar and killed the alligator. Then he called his brother-in-law to come get it and put it in the freezer.
