I am glad you realize this could cause stress and you will be on the lookout for overstressing him. If he starts going off feed, etc., leave him alone. Remember, his actions are saying "leave me alone". Hopefully reinforcing with gentle handling will let him realize its not too bad. I would assume giving in to his bluffs reinforces to him that they work and he wouldnt give up doing them if it keeps him from being picked up or handled.
