When you limited the air flow, the mold and fungus spores builds up which will eventually kill the crickets. Since they are so tiny, it doesn't take much to kill them. This is why you stuffy sitting in a room with no window and good ventilation--plus, the CO2. I heard something like from some a human doctor years back.
