I went for a mycology field trip, but looked for herps instead :/







First herp of the trip. Gastrophryne carolinensis, small with great coloration. It was in a decayed log. On site we also found tons of Cantharellus cibarius, some of the best tasting mushrooms I have had. Unfortunately I haven't thought of photographing any mushrooms lately.....





This Bufo terrestris was found in a live oak, 1/2m from the ground. Neat looking too!



That day, I hitched a ride with the entomology class to Bahimini Bay. It is a protected seashore on the north side of Edisto, where all the shells wash up. The trail to the beach went through a few hammocks, but I only saw some skinks.

Huge numbers of fiddler crabs were present in the marsh.









Almost to the beach!



It really was out of the ordinary. The only 'natural' beaches I have been to were Assateague Island, MD. Seeing the palm tress and tannic ponds right off the shore at Edisto was spectacular.









Ok, back to herps. We went out the night and found some cool stuff.







A young Agkistrodon c. contortrix.



Feisty too. Couldn't get a great shot of it and it's yellow tail...



We also found some Scaphiopus holbrookii







Wonderful looking frogs!



Also seen on the trip were Coluber constrictor(which got away ), six-lined racerunners (Cnemidophorus sexlineatus), the two other skink species (E. fasciatus and E. laticeps), and a few Nerodia.



Let me say, those chanterelles taste magnificent! Mushrooms are quickly becoming my favorite organisms....
