captive hatched oddball

I do not plan on breeding soon, however, I will breed at some point. Here is a pet ball of mine who was sold to me as a captive hatched normal. However, he looks awesome, just like this picture in person (no, the flash isn't making him look that yellow, that is seriously what he looks like in person).
Should I breed him to a pastel, or something else to see if his color/pattern is genetic? Would it be worth it?
