I would go with a plated lizard. The Sudan plated lizard is a perfect size, very slow moving, easy to handle, never bites. And very impressive looking to a little kid, best way to introduce some to lizard keeping, hands down. They will live fair as well as scraps and prepared diets. Basically indestructable.
