Hemlock tree wood, bark, and pulp is not poisonous, however, the tree is in the conifer family and is therefore a type of pine or fir tree. That being the case, I would not recommend its use as a cage substrate due to the very good possibility that the natural oils in this type of wood could possibly be an issue.
