You most likely will never figure out what locality you have 100% but there may be some indications. That is if it's a locality animal.... most US CBB animals are mutts. There are a few breeders doing locality pairings but not many.

Looking at neo color can be an indicator (again if it's really pure). Rawlings and Donnelan published a study in 2003 that showed significant genetic differences in Northern and Southern populations. The dividing line was the central mountain range on the island of New Guinea. Essentially the Southern population which includes Aru, Merauke and the Iron Range in Australia produce only yellow neo's. The Northern populations including Biak, Jayapura, Nabiri and the highlands can produce red and yellow neo's. Sooo if you've got a red neo it's most likely from the Northern population or a mutt and if you've got a yellow it could be from just about anywhere and could also be a mutt.

Your best bet is really to buy from a reputable breeder who has a history of where their animals came from. Most serious GTP breeders in the US will provide pedigree's for their animals that will trace the animals lineage all the way back to founder imports. Again very few US breeders do locality pairings. If the breeder didn't know its more than likely a mutt or the guy wasn't completely honest about where the animal came from. As long as the animal is healthy and thrives for you there really isn't a reason to worry about locality. Hope that helps.
