DAILY MIRROR (Columbo, Sri Lanka) 07 January 11 12- foot-long crocodile seen out at sea (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk) A large gathering witnessed what was an extremely rare sight on Matara beach yesterday when a crocodile was sighted on top of a rock half a nautical mile out at sea. Many of the onlookers were amazed to see the croc, which measured about 12 feet, on a rock out at sea as crocodiles were fresh water reptiles that are usually seen in rivers and streams. People believe that one of the crocodiles that were being kept at the estuary located on the Nilawala Ganga had been washed out to sea. Evidence of this was that the crocodile was making an effort to shield himself from the sea water which was crashing onto the rock it was resting on. People from the area had informed authorities to take steps to rescue the crocodile and release into the river. When inquiries were made from the Hungama Kalametiya wildlife office, the divisional forest officer, R.I. Dunusinghe, said that a team would be sent to Matara to attend to the matter today. He said that after the wild life officers inspect the crocodile they would decide on the fate of the crocodile. 12- foot-long crocodile seen out at sea
