DAY PRESS (Damascus, Syria) 08 January 11 New Salamander ( M. Ismael/Mazen)
Damascus (SANA): A new type of Salamander was discovered lately in Syria which is not yet categorized internationally.
The new type was named ''Syrian Crested Newts''. It has a big crest on the back, with small dark spots and a broad white line on each side, unlike the familiar European type.
The new Salamander's abdomen is orange in color. It is 15-cm-long.
''This type of Salamander lives in swamps and pools, feeding on their insects and worms,'' says the environmental researcher Iyad Al-Salim.
He says these salamanders live for 25 years. People in western countries raise them as pets in their houses and gardens.
