DAILY MIRROR (London, UK) 13 January 11 Salamander eggs could provide breast cancer breakthrough (Danny Buckland)
Scientists believe salamander eggs could provide a wonder drug to fight breast cancer.
Doctors isolated a protein in the eggs which halts the growth of rogue cells in humans.
And research published today shows that the team from Nottingham University has completed trials which stopped breast cancer tumours from developing.
Dr Andrew Johnson said: “It is significant and we hope it will open the door to a wonder drug for breast cancer and other tumours. It is pretty incredible. We treated tumours for three months and there was absolutely no growth.â€
The team hopes the protein can lead to treatments for other cancers. Although it could be 10 years before medication is available to the public.
Dr Johnson has been researching the links between salamanders and humans for more than 10 years but his theories were so controversial he could not get funding at his old university in Florida.
He said: “I first proposed this 10 years ago and I lost my job. People thought I was crazy but I was right. It is a great testimony to the attitude to research in the UK.â€
Each year 46,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and around 12,000 die.
