NORTH COLORADO BUSINESS REPORT (Fort Collins, Colorado) 13 January 11 UNC professor's snake venom research could help treat cancerGreeley: A University of Northern Colorado professor’s research is showing promise that drugs created from snake venoms can be used to treat breast, colon and skin cancers.
Stephen Mackessy recently received a $50,480 grant from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade to further analyze and test using purified compounds in snake venom in anti-cancer drugs.
Mackessy received an earlier award from the state of $53,260 in 2007. The current award will allow specific testing of the compounds identified in the first project.
The latest grant will also provide support for UNC undergraduate and graduate students to work on the project.
