Hi Ross, They are indeed there. Alot of private property in many areas. I spoke with one homeowner whos backyard had a stream rolling thru and an amazing rocky area, all natural, and a small canyon near the front of his house. He told me he found a baby on his driveway one morning.
A few yrs ago my wife saw one with my daughter and her friends at dusk crossing a path. They don't care at all about snakes, and they got to watch an adult cruise right by. They did call me and ask what kind it was. I went up the next day to the area - it was nestled near very nice homes. There was a rock-strewn creekbed below, and a nondescript chaparral-laden ridge above. The path was on the ridge where the snake was seen. Does not really look like typical zonata habitat on the ridge, but that is how it is in those mtns.
Very cool. So many cars and people and traffic just a stone's throw away, and yet those zonata exist. Some of the really good habitat is on private land. ----- Mark
