Tigers, Burmese pythons rescued in house fire

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Firefighters in the Philippines were shocked to find tigers and other wild animals living in a house that caught fire.

Officials say five tigers, three Indian star tortoises, two Burmese pythons and several cats and dogs were rescued and unhurt. The house was gutted.

Wildlife official Rey Villafuerte says the tigers are covered by a certificate of wildlife registration but the owners had no permit to transport them to Manila from a province south of the capital.

He says the house caretaker and one of the owners have been arrested while two others remain at large. A complaint has been filed against them for violating the country’s Wildlife Act. They face up to a year in jail and fines.

Investigators said wood may have been accidentally set on fire.
