PENDLETON — Scott and Sonda Herbert of AquaCare Critter Hut have added a work-study program for area teens.

The Herberts recently bought the former Pendleton Music House building at 337 S.W. Emigrant Ave., and moved the business there. The store offers tropical fish, reptiles, small animals and pet supplies.

“This program is perfect for any teen who loves animals, would like to learn more about how to help others be successful pet owners, and are looking for hands-on training and experience,” Sonda said.

Enrollment is limited to provide each participant individual training. The Herberts anticipate two to three openings per quarter.

The first trainees, two Pendleton High School students, began Tuesday. Sonda said she and Scott might start a second work-study team before June 1, however.

The program includes written training and hands-on experience. Participants are expected to commit 16-20 hours to successfully complete each training module.

Trainees may choose to participate in one or all seven pet-specific training modules. The training includes lessons on small animals, freshwater fish, reptiles, cats, dogs, birds and nutrition.

The Herberts recommend that teens be 16 or older and willing to commit themselves to the program. Parental consent is required. Participants will be held to the same standards of attendance as any employee.

Those interested in the program should stop by the store for more information.
