I just found a very useful product, I thought I'd share:

Lux WIN100 programmable outlet thermostat

Perfect for managing (or backing-up) space heaters or window AC units for your hobby room. Nice because you don't have to fuss with separate timer and thermostat. Costs about $30. You plug it in the wall and plug your heater or AC into the front of it - Google it for a picture.

Cheap insurance against run-away space heaters - a "when, not if" event that can be a real disaster.
