Incorporating organic matter (compost or just dead plant material)into existing soil will improve texture/friability of clay or compacted soils.
The only caveat against using grass would be if you have ever used pesticides/herbicides on your lawn. Otherwise go for it: make sure you mix it in fairly evenly.
