I would use poplar, but high grade pine will work. Cut and paint the 1x2's then attach them to the outside perimeter of the end panels screwing from the plastic panel into the 1x2's. I would also use a 1x2 on the inside, back and front of the ceiling and floor panels as well. This will give you a better material to screw the panels to during assembly, making a much sturdier structure. you won't be sorry.
