I was reading de Vosjoli's ART OF KEEPING SNAKES last night before bed thinking about creating a nice display with the new amethystine python I recently got. I've long dreamed of a gorgeous living room display that steals attention away from the television.

Anyway, under recommended cage size for naturalistic vivaria, de Vosjoli recommends a perimeter of 2.5 to 3 times the length of the snake and the height is 50% of the length. So for my 10 foot long python I'd need a cage 8.5 ft wide X 4 ft deep x 5 ft tall!

I suppose that's why large pythons are usually exempt from naturalistic vivaria efforts after they are no longer juveniles. I haven't given up on the idea, but I'm also not building a cage that won't fit through a door... at least, not yet.

I'd love to see any planted/natural vivariums people have made for their snakes. I feel us snake people could learn a thing or two about what the lizard and frog community has known for years, and that's a natural vivarium can be really rewarding.
