Pic of a 24-inch blue racer found as a fresh hatchling late summer 2010. She hibernated for a few months and currently takes defrosted fuzzies off tongs, and would eat daily except I have her on a more managed diet. She looks girthy now but I know that racers slow down on food intake at around a year old, and if they don't have enough mass during their younger months, they get thinner than the wild ones I see. If they keep enough body weight during their early months they thin to a physique comparable to wild specimens. As I say, wild blue racers are massive, powerful animals that belie conventional notions of racers as slender, whiplike snakes.
