THOROUGHBRED TIMES (Lexington, Kentucky) 12 July 11 Anti-bleeding product saves turtle (Edited press release)
Celox Veterinary, a revolutionary new product to stop bleeding in animals, aided in a recent rare surgery to remove an 8 ½ pound tumor from a male green sea turtle in Honolulu, Hawaii.
According to the May 22 Honolulu Star Advertiser, the turtle was spotted in waters in south Maui and later flown to Honolulu after the turtle, named “Hearty,” was photographed by a local grass-roots group.
Veterinarian Dr. Robert Morris performed the surgery. George Balazs, a sea turtle biologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, said the surgery to remove the tumor was only the second in Hawaii in the past nine years.
“We used about three-quarters of a pack of Celox granules on the turtle,” said Morris. “I knew there would be a lot of bleeding from a previous removal of a five pound tumor on another turtle in the same area. Tying off bleeders is difficult in this area because part of the bone is invaded. Celox made the operation a lot easier as very little blood loss occurred.”
Hawaiian sea turtles are a threatened species and cannot be hunted, captured or harassed, under federal law. After post-surgery recovery, the sea turtle was released back into the ocean near Maui.
“It’s great news that Celox was used in a successful surgery to save a member of a threatened species like the green sea turtle,” said Bill Oster of HRL Distributors, LLC of Georgetown, Kentucky. “Celox has been used for years by humans, especially in the battlefield by the military, and its growing use by veterinarians for animal care is revolutionary.”
