The skins, chitin, legs and shells of many feeders are not very digestible. Were the insects completely whole (still had the soft tissue insides)? If he is crushing the insects well before swallowing them he is getting the benefit of their organs and gutload.

I hope he's getting more variety than mealworms and waxworms. Neither of these are good staple foods, more like treats.
