It will depend on a few things.

1) The expected adult size. As so many are available as dwarf and super dwarf this would have quite different needs than one that may be expected to get 18' to 24'.

2) The ambient temperature, because a lot of glass surface will make it difficult to provide good temps especially if the snake is on the larger size compared to the enclosure.

Finally, practicality should not be overlooked. For example, I constructed my own tanks, and although they were built for easy assembly/disassembly into manageable subunits, I decided to make the rest at a total height of 22" so they will fit through doors without disassembly. The one on the bottom is to tall for that.

A 40 gallon retile tank is more than enough for a neonate and will most likely be good for at least 6 months.

The tanks I use are 8' long by 3.5' deep and are working great for my larger retics. I like the sliding glass fronts. This is an old pic of the tanks I have, and an update retic pic
