A few things come to mind right off the bat with regards to the study. 1) Mammal behavior is affected by moon and weather. Were conditions identical? 2) Mammal numbers are influenced by traffic. It takes time for wild life to respond to new pressures like road mortality. Are they truly missing or have they learned to avoid roads? 3) What are the cumulative effects of all the invasive species present there? That includes plant species. 4) What are the levels of industrial pollutants in the area? These pollutants should load up in predators like Burmese pythons and small mammalian predators. They have certainly loaded for decades in alligators. 5) What other pressures exist in the area, such as development, industrial manufacturing, etc. Just a few thoughts that come to mind as I watch these guys grasp every straw for more public funding to restore an area which has been truly abused.
