However, what I can tell you is I have two Malis that were given to me by a rescue - they were supposedly a m/f pair and both roughly 2.5 years of age (possibly true-ish based on size). The "female" turned out to be male, but didn't get his adult coloring for an additional two years. So you never know - some are just late bloomers.
