I just returned from a trip to Saratoga Springs, New York to visit my wife's side of the family. Although fairly built up, there are still lots of forested areas, streams, lakes, etc. This is just south of Lake Champlain.

Anyway, I did about 20 minutes of herping along a stream in the woods about 50ft from a main road and houses. Probably too cold, but as soon as it got dark I thought I did hear frogs, but being a West Coaster where every stream is a concrete rain channel, I don't know for sure. By then it dropped to about 35 deg F.

What kinds of herps are found in that area? Amazingly, even the most experienced local folk I spoke with there (all seasoned hunters) had essentially no knowledge of the reptiles in the area. Two of them did tell me about rattlesnakes seen in the mountains about 2 hrs away, so I will assume those are timber rattlesnakes. Only thing I saw in the woods was a deer, a wild turkey and lots of bunny droppings.
