FINALLY heard back from the vets -- and of course they both called at the same time. Do they have a club?
Anyway, Kismet has been feeling somewhat better and eating a little bit the past few days. The ultrasound was inconclusive except to show that there is no sign of peritonitis, thank God. While the radiologist couldn't rule out a partial obstruction, that wouldn't cause her to pass egg material and her symptoms don't line up with that. What the vets think happened is that for some reason she didn't calcify her eggs and started to reabsorb them, but for some reason she started laying the uncalcified eggs instead. Her calcium levels are fine, so this does concern me. However,a few weeks ago she jumped off of a ledge about three feet high and belly flopped. Could something like that have triggered the premature egg laying?
The vets on her case have both concluded that since she started eating and seems to be doing better we should take a cautious wait and see approach. The hope is that she will pass all of the material on her own and she will stay on the antibiotics to prevent sepsis. We are prepared to do surgery if necessary, though we are hoping to avoid it.
