I would tend to agree with Cliff, it's not the scales turning white but the margins between them and the edges. I'm no vet but First thing that comes to mind is some sort of fungal infection.
I have/had Calico BRB's with areas that have turned white and have seen first hand how the color morphs to white and does not look like the pic you showed. ----- Thanks,
