Today I went to the local big box store to check out an incandescent light bulb sale because, allegedly, 60 W bulbs are being discontinued at the end of this year. I noticed that they STILL had 100 W bulbs still on the shelves for standard prices. Since I thought those were supposed to be discontinued at the end of 2011, according to the newspaper articles, I was surprised to see those. I asked the sales rep for that department about that. He said that the manufacture of the 100's was illegal after 2011, but not the sales and that they still have a stockpile of 100's left over from last year and they are allowed to sell the existing stock. I asked about the 60's and he mentioned that he thought those would be illegal to manufacture after 2013 (I thought it was supposed to be after 2012), but was not sure. He also said he thought other types of incandescents such as flood lights and spot lights would be discontinued then too, but again was not sure.

Since I was there anyway, I bought 4 cases of 60's and some floods. I probably would have bought more if I knew they would be discontinued by the end of this year, but the sales rep did not seem to think that was the case.

It would help me plan my light bulb purchasing if I had more specific information about supply. It is really hard to figure out how many bulbs I need to stockpile to last the rest of my life. Does anyone have any updated info on incandescent availability?

What kind of bulbs do you use on your diurnal reptile enclosures for a basking heat source as well as illumination? Do you use the standard round household bulbs, or the conical floods or spots, or something else?
