that might work. I have mine in my garage too. For heat, I have a space heater, a basking lamp and a pig blanket in the hide. This has worked for years for me. One thing to consider is that they instinctually find their basking site from the sun, overhead light.
They are not dumb and will figure out where they can find heat
but I think they can thermoregulate better being able to move around under a light. I guess you would have to try your idea and play with it.
