YOu could, but I would definitely seal the whole interior in some shape or fashion. The stuff is so thick and dries so fast tho - you could coat the entire inside with multiple coats in the time it would take one coat of poly to dry. Also, it's very bright white and dramatically increases the light in the cage. When you open the can make sure you stir it VERY well and get all the grit that has settled. Then slop it on there thick
