Number one there was a shortage as the result of a failure at a large supplier. Fundamentally, when price drives consolidation of production you loose a level of resilience in the supply chain. The second part is that costs have gone up. Feed, utilities, equipment, shipping..... everything has increased and at some time point those costs have to be passed on and the shortage provided the opportunity to do so without the risk of loosing costumers.
