After many unproductive warmer days, on this cool day I was surprised to find a mated pair of southeastern crowned snakes immediately followed by a scarlet snake. Later I went back to the same rock that had the scarlet snake and now there was a subadult racer. This is an isolated granitic habitat in western NC with species usually found along the coast (prickly pear etc).
