When they were born they didn't have any orange on the side just a yellow dorsal. I had a breeder pair orange coast garters a couple years ago, that produced some decent looking babies and they also where born without much color but put it on fast. The parents didn't have as much orange on the lower sides like flames as yours but where more orange spotted. Below is pic of the breeder pair I had. They where also very docile.
