There is nothing to it, apply, fill out form, send money. Remember that permit gives them the right to come on your property whenever they want, locked gate or not home. I've been checked twice in 40 years at my home,even when I had Venomous and well known in the Herp.community. I never had a problem with them but times have changed and relationships are strained. There has been some changes for the better concerning targeted enforcement of the Law with inspections (birthday's of captive born reptiles)and excessive armed enforcement at the Daytona Expo. (thank you Wayne Hill for sticking your neck out for that one) Some of the requirements are quite antiquated and conflict with good husbandry.All in all if you exceed their requirements and obey State and Federal Wildlife Laws you should be OK.
