I think wire shelves are great for keeping snakes that fit into sweater boxes. I use Iris boxes (the best!) and the old standard Sterilite 1655, all with lids. The Iris boxes are larger and house my Antaresia pythons.
Heat tape and heat pads work very well on the wire shelves. The wire conducts heat. It is not easy to overheat Flexwatt on wire, even at full throttle. I use a controller, but it is still nice to know that the wire material provides some limiting effect on its own.
If you are like me and do not keep very many snakes (and you do not mind using lids), wire racks are available, configurable for any size box and not too expensive. I just used whatever I found at Target.
