And to protect itself in a natural way. After years and years of pit tag studies in nature, you quickly learn that snakes retreat into holes, then quickly turn around and face you with only the business end. Snakes are kings of "in the ground" on the surface, they are at risk. In captivity, keepers think, they live on the surface.
