Hello all, im the proud owner of two new cresties. This is my first time owning crested geckos but not my first reptile, I also raise panther chameleons, a green tree python, a corn snake, and I had a beardie plus lots of other non-reptilian animals. Im fairly confident that I have a good basic knowledge on crestie care and husbandry and Ive done some research. I have a Zoomed naturalistic terrarium 12x12x18, and its a planted tank with several layers of different substrates for humidity and filtration. had planned on getting a crestie about a month ago and waited for petcos reptile rally to get it at half-off (im aware of the cautions of buying from chain pet stores). I couldnt resist because he was a very pretty crestie, im thinking a flame, and the price was good. It seems pretty healthy as well. The second crestie I got from a local breeder that I met at petco and we did the exchange there. Both geckos appear to be only a few months old, at around 3 inches. However, some of the information the breeder told me didnt seem right.

He told me hes been breeding cresties for years. I told him that I was getting one at petco, and he said I should take a look at his. I mentioned that I had a small tank for what I thought was meant for only a single gecko. He said that he had a 10 gallon tank with 6 geckos in it (I was somewhat appalled by this, but ended up getting a second crestie anyway because it was another awesome flame). He said that he feeds the food mixture dry because when its wet, the geckos walk in it, get it all over the walls, and it creates bacteria. He also said to get isopods (such as roly-polys) to break down tank matter. I mentioned springtails, he said they werent as good. I think there may have been some other questionable things, I just cant think of them on the spot right now.

Now, I have not nor do I plan on taking his information as fact yet. I wanted to ask on forums before I did the research myself just to get second opinions. So far though, I already know that feeding geckos a dry mixture is pretty controversial... but more thought on this matter would be appropriated! I can post pics of the geckos upon request, I might like to know if a gender can be deducted yet and what exact morph they are.
