We have ours set up with a lump sum going with each dog up front (to cover any expenses of getting the dog relocated, cared for until arrangememts are made, etc) and then an additional $1000 per year between the dogs current age and age 13 to cover any on-going expenses. This way they are cover if they are a 3 year old or a 10 year at the time this would be needed. We also have a person specified for each dog who has agreed to keep them if something should happen to us.
For those who have not yet planned ahead, you really need to. It is very sad when this is not done and relatives have no interest in the dogs or don't understand how important our dogs are to us.
