Water Lettuce is dying, all of it ?

In my 12'by 6' pond which is otherwise healthy, all my water lettuce plants, (which had beautifully covered the surface, are dead,) the hyacinths continue to flourish, why??? they turn yellow and lots of black specks which come off, and have bites taken out of them.
