There are lots of natural ponds using mud and clay to seal the water in. try a couple of these sources for info...

pond soil sealant

bentonite clay pond sealant

natural ponds and
earth ponds explanations from some biologists.

In natural ponds you have to be very careful. With a soil bottom, the lilies could choke the pond down to around ten feet if the water is not real muddy.
