Have you installed your pond yet?
Most of the factors you need to look for is the same as hiring any contractor. Interview your installer, ask for references, ask about warranties on labor and parts, ask if they are insured or bonded, time frame of the work to be completed, examples of what they have in mind and how they will acheive their goal. Also do you have a local pond club, members are always willing to help newbies, and they might give you some good leads.
Do not hire someone on the spot, check them out, and think it over. One thing I have always learn on choosing contractors for any job, if you have a bad feeling about a person, pass them over. Just my opinion, but anytime I did not listen to those negative feelings I regretted.
Last, never pay in advance for the labor. If they ask you to pay for product when it comes in that is OK as long as you take possesion of the product at time of payment.
Let us know how it goes. ----- Jason B Bour http://stonesriveraquatics.com
