Using Tarps for Liner

Hi, I'm thinking about using a tarp for pond liner. Are there any dangers of toxins coming from tarps?

It's a silly question, but actually I have to jerry rig a pond right now because I'm living in Taiwan, haven't a knowledge of the language to say and find pond liner. I don't think they have it here either.
