Im considering getting a chinchilla as a pet, but I want to do the responsible thing and make sure that I am ready to handle one. Ive done a lot of reasearch and think I can meet all of a chin's needs, but I still have one question.

Im in the military and living down in Norfolk, VA, and my girlfriend lives up in norhtern VA, near Washington DC. I work a normal 7-4, monday to friday, so on the weekends I usually go up and stay with her in her apartment. Im concerned this might not be a suitable situation for a chin, because I would either be leaving it alone most every weekend, or bringing it with me. I know my girlfriend would be ok with me bringing it up to visit with me, she likes them too, but Im not sure how well it would handle a 2-3 hour road trip friday night and sunday, pretty much each and every weekend.

I want to get some input from expirienced chin owners who can give me some more insight to this situation.
