You only have one? They're extremely social animals, you NEED at least two.

Also, try getting a bonding pouch. Just lay it in the cage with him, and wait until he goes in it. Don't force him in. When he's in, gently pick up the pouch, zipper it and throw it around your neck. You can walk around with him.

He may have been neglected by the previous owners,too.

How big of a cage do you have? A regular hamster cage will not do. They are extremely active, and need A LOT of room to jump around in and burn off energy. That may be another issue he's so aggressive. Too much energy and not enough room to burn it off in.
