Breeding Gold Gourami

My male Gourami is very aggressive towards my female. Is this normal breeding behavior? He chases her around the tank and nips at her all day. Today is his first day in the breeder tank. She has been alone for about 3 days. She is very fat and looks ready for him. She has stopped running from him and kind of turns sideways when he approaches her. I really want them to breed, but not at her expense. Any help???
